This salt chlorine generator comparison covers the three systems most pool owners and pros end up choosing between: Pentair IntelliChlor Plus, Hayward AquaRite S3 Omni, and Jandy AquaPure or TruClear. All three make chlorine from dissolved salt and all three do the job well. The right pick usually comes down to the automation already on your pad, your pool size, and whether you are replacing a cell or the whole system.

Pentair IntelliChlor Plus (Plus30, Plus40) and Power Center
The IntelliChlor Plus line is Pentair's current-generation salt chlorine generator. Each cell has a single sensor module that combines conductivity (salt), temperature and flow sensing, so there is no separate flow switch to plumb. Pentair lists chlorine output at 100% as 1.10 lb per 24 hours for the Plus30 and 1.40 lb for the Plus40. Larger and smaller versions exist (the Plus60 and the LT25), but the Plus30 and Plus40 cover most residential pools.
- Plus30 cell: Pentair IntelliChlor Plus30 Salt Cell (523730)
- Plus40 cell: Pentair IntelliChlor Plus40 Salt Cell (523735)
- Complete system: IntelliChlor Plus30 with Power Center (523733)
- Power center only: IntelliChlor Power Center (520556)
Power center compatibility. Pentair says all of the new LT and Plus units connect to the PC100 PowerCenter with the same connector used by earlier iChlor and IntelliChlor generators. The one exception is the smallest LT15, which can also run on its own PowerPack. If you already have an IntelliChlor power center, a Plus cell is generally a cell-only swap. Pentair also says the Plus cells are made to retrofit existing IntelliChlor and iChlor plumbing: the Plus30 matches the shorter iChlor body, and the Plus40 matches the current IntelliChlor length. Confirm which body length you have before you order.
Salt and flow. Pentair's ideal salt level is 3,600 ppm. The unit warns "ADD SALT" below 3,000 ppm and shuts off below 2,600 ppm. The built-in flow switch needs at least 25 GPM to activate, and Pentair recommends a bypass above 80 GPM. Production stops when the water is cold: you get a low-temp warning below 60°F and a shutoff at about 52°F.
Automation. IntelliChlor Plus works with IntelliCenter, IntelliConnect and IntellipH, and with older EasyTouch, IntelliTouch, SunTouch and IntelliSync systems. Once a cell is connected to automation, you set output from the automation, not from the cell's display. Pentair's SmartSense feature adjusts output automatically when it is paired with an IntelliFlo pump or a pool cover. If you are building a new pad, IntelliCenter bundles with a Plus40 included are also available, such as the IntelliCenter i8PS with IntelliChlor Plus40 (523961) and the IntelliCenter i5PS with Plus40 (523964).
Hayward AquaRite S3 Omni
The Hayward AquaRite S3 Omni (AQRS340OMNI) combines a salt chlorinator with Hayward's Omni control platform. Besides making chlorine, it can run pumps, heaters, lights and valve actuators, and you can control it from the OmniLogic app or by voice through Alexa and Google Home. Hayward rates the AQRS340 for up to 40,000 gallons in most residential pools and 25,000 gallons in most commercial pools. Its manual lists the TCELLS340 cell at about 1.47 lb of chlorine per day.
Cell compatibility. Hayward's AquaRite S3 training guide says the S3 supports only the S3 TurboCell family (TCELLS315, TCELLS318, TCELLS325, TCELLS340). An older-style T-Cell from a previous AquaRite will not work on the S3. If you change cell sizes, the cell type has to be updated in the S3's service settings. Hayward also warns that non-genuine cells can fail early and void the warranty.
Salt and flow. Hayward calls 3,200 ppm optimal, with default low and high salt alarms at 2,700 and 3,400 ppm. The S3 can still produce chlorine across a much wider range, but you should keep it near 3,200. A separate flow switch is required and needs about 13 GPM to engage. Hayward specifies at least 12 inches of straight pipe ahead of the switch, and the cell can count toward that length. Output is capped at 20% when the cell water is between 50°F and 59°F and stops below 50°F.
Automation. If you already own an OmniLogic or OmniPL, a standard AquaRite S3 can run in Remote mode over RS-485 and let Omni handle chlorination. For a pad that needs more relays, the Hayward OmniPL 4-Relay with TCELLS340 (HLPLUS4W) pairs Omni automation with the same 40K cell.
Jandy AquaPure with PureLink (PLC700, PLC1400)
AquaPure is Jandy's long-running salt chlorinator. PLC700 and PLC1400 are cell kits that run on either an AquaPure power pack or a Jandy PureLink power center. Each kit includes a three-port cell with 2"–2½" universal unions, a sensor and a DC cord.
- Jandy AquaPure PLC700: rated by Jandy for residential pools up to 12,000 gallons, with about 0.625 lb of chlorine per day.
- Jandy AquaPure PureLink PLC1400: rated for residential pools up to 40,000 gallons, with about 1.25 lb per day.
Cell compatibility. Jandy's manual says existing three-port AquaPure cells can be swapped directly. Older two-port (square) cells need a specific replacement option based on the thread style. The power center also has to be set for the 700 or the 1400; it ships configured for the 1400. Have the old cell's model and the power center's configuration in hand before you order.
Salt and flow. Jandy calls for 3,000–3,500 ppm. The cell shuts off when salt falls below 2,000 ppm, and Jandy warns that running low on salt leads to early cell failure. The flow sensor is only a backup. Jandy requires the chlorinator to be interlocked with the pump so the cell runs only when the pump does. Production is disabled below 51°F unless Boost mode is on.
Automation. Connected through PureLink, AquaPure works with AquaLink RS (firmware JJ or later; the AquaLink Z4 is not supported), so salt level and output show up on your controller. For a complete pad, the AquaLink RS PS6 kit with PureLink sub-panel, PLC1400 and iAquaLink (IQ906-PS-PC-SWC) combines automation, a power center and a cell.
Jandy TruClear and the Pro Series TruClear Replacement Cell
The Jandy TruClear (TRUCLEAR11K) is a compact, dual-voltage chlorinator for pools up to 35,000 gallons. The cell has a clear housing, so you can see scale on the blades without removing it. It also pulls out with its cord attached, which makes dip-cleaning simple. Jandy says it needs as little as 6 inches of horizontal plumbing, but the manual's preferred layout is a 16-inch horizontal run with the cell as the last piece of equipment before the pool.
When a TruClear cell wears out, the replacement is the Jandy Pro Series TruClear Replacement Cell (R0693900). It is the cell only; the clear housing is a separate part. TruClear cells do not fit AquaPure, and AquaPure cells do not fit TruClear.
Salt and flow. Jandy recommends 3,000 ppm (3,000–3,500 ppm) and says that below 2,500 ppm the cell can fail early. TruClear needs at least 20 GPM. As with AquaPure, the flow sensor is only a backup, and the power pack must be interlocked with the pump. Jandy does not recommend running it below 55°F. TruClear connects to AquaLink RS over RS-485, and from there you can use iAquaLink app control.
How Sizing Works (and the 1.5–2x Rule of Thumb)
A cell's gallon rating is a maximum, not a target. None of these three manufacturers publishes a fixed multiplier. However, Jandy's manual says year-round use and high water temperatures may require a larger unit, and Hayward rates the same 40K system for only 25,000 gallons in commercial use. Pool pros commonly oversize so the cell's rating is about 1.5 to 2 times the pool volume. A larger cell can make the same chlorine at a lower output setting or with fewer hours, which tends to stretch cell life. Treat this as a rule of thumb rather than a manufacturer spec.
- Up to about 12,000 gallons, light use: PLC700 meets Jandy's rating, but most owners in hot climates step up a size.
- 15,000–20,000 gallons: Plus30, PLC1400, TruClear or AquaRite S3 40K all give you headroom.
- 20,000–25,000 gallons: Plus40, AquaRite S3 40K or PLC1400 keep you in the 1.5–2x range.
- Over 25,000 gallons, or a hot climate with heavy use: Look at Pentair's larger Plus60 or consider two cells, and ask us about sizing.
How to Choose
Match your automation first
If you have Pentair IntelliCenter or EasyTouch, IntelliChlor Plus is the natural fit. If you have Hayward Omni, choose AquaRite S3. If you have Jandy AquaLink RS, choose AquaPure with PureLink or TruClear. Staying in one brand gives you full monitoring and control from one app. Mixing brands usually means the chlorinator runs on its own.
Replacing only a cell? Match the generation
The cell must match its control or power center. Pentair Plus cells work on the IntelliChlor PC100 power center. Hayward S3 controls accept only TCELLS3 cells. Jandy AquaPure and TruClear use different cells. Bring your old cell's part number and the model from the power center label, or send them to us and we will confirm the match.
Flow and plumbing
Pentair needs 25 GPM through the cell, which matters if you run a variable-speed pump at low RPM. Hayward's separate flow switch engages at about 13 GPM, and Jandy's TruClear needs 20 GPM. Whichever you choose, the power supply should be interlocked with the pump. Electrical connections, bonding and GFCI protection must follow the NEC and local codes. Manufacturers call for a licensed electrician or qualified pool professional, and your area may require a permit.
FAQ
How long does a salt cell last?
Pentair, Hayward and Jandy do not publish a lifespan in years. Life depends on hours run, output setting, salt level, water temperature, calcium scaling and how often the cell is acid-washed. Each controller warns you near the end: a "Check Cell" message on Pentair that persists after cleaning, "Exhausted" on Hayward, or "Cell life expired" on TruClear. For coverage, see the manufacturer warranty.
Can I put a Pentair cell on a Hayward or Jandy control?
No. Cells are matched to their own brand's power center and generation. Even within one brand, older cells may not work on newer controls. For example, the AquaRite S3 accepts only TCELLS3 cells.
What salt level should I keep?
Follow your unit's manual: about 3,600 ppm for Pentair IntelliChlor Plus, 3,200 ppm for Hayward AquaRite S3, and 3,000–3,500 ppm for Jandy AquaPure and TruClear. Use pure, non-iodized pool salt without anti-caking agents.
Why does my salt system stop making chlorine in winter?
All of these systems cut or stop production in cold water to protect the cell. Depending on the model, that starts in the low 50s or mid-50s °F. This is normal.
Do I need a separate flow switch?
Not with IntelliChlor Plus, because flow sensing is in the cell's sensor module. Hayward AquaRite S3 requires its flow switch. Jandy AquaPure and TruClear have flow sensors but require a pump interlock as the main protection.
Is IntelliChlor or AquaRite better?
Both are proven systems. Pick IntelliChlor Plus if you have Pentair automation or want a built-in flow and temperature sensor. Pick AquaRite S3 Omni if you want salt plus full Omni pad control in one box.
