Looking for the best variable-speed pool pump? For most in-ground pools the choice comes down to Pentair (IntelliFlo3 VSF, IntelliFlo VS+SVRS, SuperFlo VST, WhisperFlo VST), Jandy (VS FloPro and ePump) and Hayward (TriStar VS and Super Pump VS). All of them are solid pumps. The right one depends on the automation you already have, your plumbing size, your voltage and how big your pool is.

The basics: THP vs HP, and single-speed vs variable-speed
THP vs HP
Older pumps were sold by nameplate horsepower plus a "service factor," the extra load the motor can handle continuously. Total horsepower (THP) is roughly nameplate HP times service factor, so it describes the motor's real capability. Today manufacturers and DOE rate pumps by THP, and variable-speed motors usually carry a 1.0 service factor, so their HP and THP match. When you replace an older pump, compare THP to THP. Jandy notes that a pump's hydraulic horsepower (the work actually done on the water) is about half of its THP.
Single-speed vs variable-speed
A single-speed pump always runs at full speed, even though filtering clean water rarely needs that much flow. A variable-speed pump uses a permanent-magnet motor and a drive, so you can run long, slow filtration cycles and save higher speeds for vacuuming, spa jets, water features or a cleaner. Moving water slowly takes much less power than moving it fast. That is why the manufacturers' savings claims are so large: Pentair says the IntelliFlo3 VSF can save "up to 90%" in energy compared with a single-speed pump running 12 hours a day in a 20,000-gallon pool. Your savings will depend on your utility rates, run time and plumbing.
DOE efficiency rules for pool pumps (current as of 2026)
- Pumps (July 19, 2021): U.S. Department of Energy standards for dedicated-purpose pool pumps apply to pumps made in or imported into the U.S. Jandy's guide explains that the rule doesn't name variable-speed pumps. In practice, though, variable-speed pumps comply, while most single- and two-speed filter pumps at or above about 1 THP do not. Smaller high-efficiency single-speed pumps are still made.
- Replacement motors (September 29, 2025): A separate DOE rule covers dedicated-purpose pool pump motors. Standard-size motors (1.15 to 5 THP) manufactured on or after September 29, 2025 must include variable-speed control.
- Small motors (2027): Small-size motors (0.5 to under 1.15 THP) have a September 28, 2027 compliance date. In April 2026, DOE announced it will delay enforcement for small-size motors made between September 28, 2027 and March 26, 2029.
Some states set their own pool pump rules too, so check what applies where you live.
Pentair variable-speed pumps
IntelliFlo3 VSF: Pentair's flagship
The IntelliFlo3 VSF 1.5 HP with I/O board (011066) and 3.0 HP with I/O board (011076) are variable speed and variable flow. You can program target flow rates, and the pump adjusts as conditions change, for example as the filter loads up. It has Wi-Fi built in and is controlled through the Pentair Pool app, with a Pro app for service companies. Pentair says it "can be controlled by most Pentair automation system[s] via an RS-485 connection." The I/O (relay) board can run other equipment such as lights, a heater or a booster pump. An optional touchscreen kit is available.
- 1.5 HP: 115/208-230V, 1.5" or 2" NPT ports, WEF 9.4
- 3.0 HP: 208-230V, 2", 2.5" or 3" NPT ports, WEF 7.1
- Pentair lists filtration flow up to 93 gpm on system curve C, about 2 turnovers a day for pools under 65,000 gallons
IntelliFlo VS+SVRS: built-in suction protection
The IntelliFlo VS+SVRS (011057) is a 3.95 THP, 230V pump with a Safety Vacuum Release System built in. Pentair says the system "detects drain blockage and automatically shuts the pump off." It has an onboard keypad with speed buttons, Quick Clean and Time Out functions, and a password lock. It works with Pentair IntelliTouch, EasyTouch and SunTouch systems. SVRS is one layer of protection, so check your local code for entrapment-protection requirements.
SuperFlo VST: drop-in for SuperFlo and Super Pump
The SuperFlo VST (342002) is 2.2 THP and runs on 115V to 230V. Pentair calls it a "drop-in replacement for the Hayward Super Pump and existing Pentair SuperFlo pumps." It has a digital keypad with three programmable speeds, a 24-hour clock and a watt display, plus RS-485 for automation. Pentair rates savings at up to 80% versus single- or two-speed pumps under the same 20,000-gallon test conditions.
WhisperFlo VST: for larger WhisperFlo pads
The WhisperFlo VST (011533) is a 2.6 THP, 115/208-230V pump with 2" x 2" NPT ports and a TEFC motor. It is ENERGY STAR certified with a WEF of 8.4. Pentair positions it as a drop-in replacement for existing WhisperFlo pumps.
Jandy variable-speed pumps
VS FloPro: SpeedSet vs no-controller versions
The VS FloPro runs on 115V or 230V. Jandy says the 1.85 HP model performs the same at either voltage and replaces single-speed pumps up to 1.5 HP. Jandy's spec sheet lists 2" unionized fittings with 2" internal threads. Pumps with 1.5" threaded ports, such as some Hayward Super Pumps, need reducers. The main thing to understand is the controller:
- With SpeedSet ("S" suffix): The VSFHP185DVS has an onboard SpeedSet controller, so it works stand-alone. The VSFHP185DV2AS and VSFHP270DV2AS add two programmable auxiliary relays (for a salt chlorinator or booster pump, for example) and 4-speed dry-contact control.
- No controller: The VSFHP185DV2A and VSFHP270DV2A are meant for pads that already have Jandy AquaLink automation, which Jandy says works with the pump. You can also add a separate controller: SpeedSet, the JEP-R ("compatible with all Jandy variable-speed pumps") or the iQPUMP01 for iAquaLink app control. Jandy also says its SpeedSet Plus controller works on pools that have Pentair automation.
ePump: the large-body option
The Jandy ePump 2.7 HP (VSSHP270DV2A) is a 2.70 THP pump with a larger body. It has auto-sensing 115/230V power, 2" x 2.5" unions (2.5" x 3" tailpieces available) and is recommended for 2" to 3" pipe. It has two auxiliary relays and an RS-485 port, and Jandy says it detects automatically whether it's connected to an automation system or a traditional controller. This version ships without a controller; the "S" models have SpeedSet preinstalled.
Hayward variable-speed pumps
TriStar VS
The Hayward TriStar VS (W3SP3202VSP) is a 1.85 THP, 230V pump. It runs from 600 to 3,450 RPM and has 2" x 2.5" CPVC union connections. Hayward designs it for medium to large in-ground pools. It can run stand-alone from its programmable touch pad, under Hayward automation, or with other brands' systems through relay control. Hayward says its variable-speed pumps "can save up to 90% on energy costs" compared with single-speed pumps, citing ENERGY STAR third-party test data.
Super Pump VS
The Hayward Super Pump VS (W3SP2603VSP) is a 1.65 THP, 230V model on the familiar Super Pump platform with a TEFC motor. Hayward says the Super Pump VS can run stand-alone or with any automation system through relay control. The 230V model can also be run by Hayward automation, including OmniLogic.
Controls and automation compatibility
- Pentair automation (IntelliCenter, EasyTouch, IntelliTouch): Pentair pumps are the natural fit, connected over RS-485. Check your controller's firmware and the pump manual for your exact combination.
- Jandy AquaLink / iAquaLink: Jandy pumps, including the no-controller VS FloPro and ePump versions.
- Hayward OmniLogic and other Hayward automation: TriStar VS and Super Pump VS (230V).
- Mixed brands or timer-based pads: Pumps with relay or dry-contact inputs (Jandy DV2A models, Hayward VS) can take speed commands from another brand's relays. You'll usually lose some features compared with native communication.
- No automation: Choose a pump with an onboard controller, such as the SpeedSet models, SuperFlo VST, WhisperFlo VST, the Hayward VS touch pads or the IntelliFlo3 app.

How to choose the best variable-speed pool pump
Size by flow, not horsepower
Start with turnover. Divide your pool's gallons by the hours you want to filter, then divide by 60 to get gallons per minute. A 20,000-gallon pool turned over in 8 hours needs about 42 gpm. Then check that the pump's curve and your filter can handle your highest-flow job, such as spa jets, a water feature or a pressure cleaner. Small plumbing limits flow no matter how large the motor is.
- Smaller pools and existing SuperFlo or Super Pump pads: SuperFlo VST, Super Pump VS, VS FloPro 1.85 HP or IntelliFlo3 VSF 1.5 HP.
- Typical in-ground pools on 2" plumbing: TriStar VS, WhisperFlo VST, VS FloPro 1.85 or 2.7 HP.
- Large pools, spillovers, water features, 2.5" to 3" plumbing: IntelliFlo3 VSF 3.0 HP, IntelliFlo VS+SVRS, VS FloPro 2.7 HP or ePump 2.7 HP.
- Commercial pools: See the Hayward HCP 2500 TriStar VS, the Pentair WhisperFloXF VS and our commercial pool equipment collection.
Match voltage and plumbing
Look at the existing pump's label and breaker. Dual-voltage pumps (IntelliFlo3 1.5 HP, SuperFlo VST, WhisperFlo VST, VS FloPro, ePump) fit 115V or 230V circuits. TriStar VS, Super Pump VS, IntelliFlo VS+SVRS and IntelliFlo3 3.0 HP need 230V. Electrical work, bonding and grounding should be done by a licensed electrician to local code. Many areas also require a permit. Next, match port sizes and the inlet height of your old pump so the new one plumbs in without strain.
Single-speed replacement options and motors
Some pools still call for a single-speed pump, for example a small pool or a budget repair. DOE-compliant high-efficiency models are available, including the Pentair SuperFlo High Performance (348190), Pentair WhisperFlo High Performance (015583) and Hayward Super Pump High Efficiency (W3SP2607X10).
If the pump body is in good shape, replacing just the motor can make sense. Examples include the Pentair 354821S 1 HP TEFC motor, 354803S 3/4 HP, 354817S 3 HP and 354822S Challenger motor. Keep in mind the DOE motor rule above: standard-size single-speed replacement motors can no longer be manufactured, so supply is limited to existing inventory. FAQ
IntelliFlo vs VS FloPro: which is better?
Both are reliable. IntelliFlo3 VSF adds variable-flow control, built-in Wi-Fi and an optional relay board, and it pairs naturally with Pentair automation. VS FloPro is dual voltage, comes with or without a SpeedSet controller, and pairs naturally with Jandy AquaLink. In most cases, choose the pump that matches your automation.
Do I have to buy a variable-speed pump?
For most in-ground filter pumps above about 1 THP, yes. Since July 2021, DOE efficiency standards have effectively made variable-speed the norm. Smaller high-efficiency single-speed pumps are still available.
What does "no controller" mean on a Jandy pump?
The pump has no onboard keypad. It's meant to be run by Jandy AquaLink automation or by a controller you add, such as SpeedSet, JEP-R or iQPUMP01.
Can a Pentair pump run on Hayward or Jandy automation?
Usually only through relay or dry-contact control, if the pump supports it. Native communication generally works only between pumps and automation from the same brand. Confirm in both manuals.
What speed should I run my variable-speed pump at?
Use the lowest speed that keeps the water clear, the skimmers working and your heater or chlorinator getting enough flow. Raise the speed only for cleaning, spa jets or features.
Is a bigger variable-speed pump a waste?
Not necessarily. A larger pump can make the flow you need at a lower RPM, but it has to suit your plumbing, filter and voltage.
